Sigh, the potential set of causes gets more obscure now. :-(

So, are you logged in the console now and able to ping boss?
What do these two show:

pc1>  /usr/local/etc/emulab/tmcc.bin bossinfo
pc1>  /usr/local/etc/emulab/tmcc.bin status
Yes, I can ping boss from pc1, but both of the commands you asked me to run output "gethostbyname(UNKNOWN) failed" and nothing else.
