I realized that I omitted that line only when running on our own testbed.
Now I've checked it works fine with our Emulab too :)

By the way, is there any good document about which attributes in database is set when an experiment is started and swapped in?

Ah, you are missing a critical line in your ns file. The very first
line should be:

source tb_compat.tcl
