>> Hi Gina,
Did you want us to wait until 1 year, or go ahead with our almost 7 month
old Lucy to check clearances?
This was unclear to me. Thanks!

Hi Libby! How is the SNOW? :-)
I think if you have already had Lucy spayed (?) you can wait until a year
old. Also please check with your vet and ask if they do many OFA type film
procedures. If they do not I would prefer to find you a referral to a vet
who does, in your area of course. We are also submitting the films to GDC
not OFA and if we all wait till one year of age I can submit the whole
litter to GDC as a litter package. This will mean the vet who does the
x-rays will send them to me and I will collect them and submit all
together. There are forms that must be filled out by you and the vet so
please before you make any appointments CALL me so we can go over a check
list.
Ideally this is what I would like to do with the One and Casino litters
for hips and elbows:
I would like to have as many of you who can have your films done by my
vet in Aloha OR. Aloha Dog and Cat
Doug Gribskov 503-649-5611 at close to 1 year of age. Hips and elbows to
be done via GDC procedures.
The forms and instructions needed to be downloaded from the GDC site and
forms completed by both you and your vet:
*For the One litter: I would like to get as many of you together in
February as we can and do this. Aloha Vet will give us a discount if we
can get 4 dogs together and go as a group. I am avial on Fridays to come
along and ram rod this... Dr. Doug is avail every other Friday so we do
have to work on timing this. Ideally a Friday afternoon is best when ever
possible. DiTTo is already done (we did her early as I had 3 to do and she
made 4 to get the discount) :-) But I will make myself available if we can
get a group together. If we can not do a group, I would still prefer that
you go to Aloha and please please please tell them your dog is from me so
that they will know to do the elbows the way GDC will accept the
x-rays. Call me in advance if you can not do a group. :-)
*For the Casino litter: I would again like for as many of you who can meet
with a group and go in July. Same rules apply here as to above.
*For those who are not local enough to come to Aloha both litters: One
litter February 2002 Casino litter not before July 8, 2002 if you are
already altered. If you have not altered yet, just call me please...
1. Check with your vet make sure they are use to doing certifications for
OFA/GDC. Please tell them we want the films read by GDC and I would prefer
to submit as a litter and they should send the films properly marked to
*me* so I can submit as a litter if possible.
2. Down load the forms and make sure you take the instructions and forms
into your vet prior to your appointment so they can be prepared to do the
right series of x-rays and mark the films properly. I know you get tired
of hearing this, but not all vets are versed at doing these procedures the
way they are required for certifications. Please check with me.
But in short, down load the forms and talk to your vet clinic about the
procedures and make them aware that we would like to have the films sent to
me so that I can submit as a litter. My info for your vet: They can call
me if you confuse them :-) As I am sure I have confused you...

At 09:31 PM 1/31/02 -0500, you wrote:
What a cutie pie!! BTW, did you ever hear the results of the cataract
tests--those were the ones we did with swabs on Milka and just
wondering...Thanks, Karin
Hi Karin, Thanks we do like Toni. :-)
On the swabs for cataracts, this was not a test. It is DNA mapping, you
will each need to have your dog looked at by a Vet Ophthalmologist. For
those living out of the area you will need to ask your regular veterinarian
for a referral to a Board Certified Ophthalmologist that can do a CERF
exam. You will need to have your AKC registration papers with you at the
time of the exam. Those that live close enough to us can come here to
Brier this summer and have their dogs eyes checked when we run the eye
clinic. After eyes are checked a copy of the form you receive needs to be
sent to me so that I can collect them all and send them into Vet Gen, or
you can send directly to Vet Gen but I would like a copy too of
course. This is an on going thing and there is no hurry to rush out and
get eyes done. In fact with the Casino litter before July is probably a
waste of time. At the time of exam is when you find out if your dog is
affected or not. I have posted a lot of information on cataracts to this
list, mostly explaining they are of no consequence normally to a pet but
for dogs who will be bred, we would not breed a dog with cataracts. Might
check this page and links provided for some more
info: http://www.briergoldens.com/golden_rule.htm
But since one of the "One" litter is affected (our first known affected)
the information is valuable here as well as HELPFUL to Vet Gen in the
attempt to map the genes and come up with a DNA test to detect who is a
carrier and who is not. You see, with these cataracts we call them JV's
(juveniles) they can crop up as young as 8 weeks to 10 years old. So, even
though a dog is clear as are Gidget and SeaJay we check them yearly since
they are in the breeding program. Now I don't expect you all to do yearly
eye checks but twice in a say the first 5 years would be nice, like age 1
and again age 4 to 5 if you will.
Ok I know this is all confusing don't feel bad if you do not understand, re
post questions here or call me if you are really confused. <LOL>
