Re: Sleeping

Karin, she is fine in her crate for now. Don't rush it. Gosh, my poor puppies at five months aren't even in a consideration phase to ever be left out when I can't or someone else can't watch them. You will just "know" when the time is right.
I have had dogs tell me earlier than some that they don't want a crate anymore, and some that have to be forced out of one. I swear, Nicki wanted to whelp her puppies in hers. We had to lock her out the last week of her pregnancy. The first night she slept outside it and cried. I have had some come out at a year, and Scully is just now out at night at 3 years. She is incredibly immature. During the day, when we are not home, she barks at the window at any noise, so she gets crated still when we are gone.
Milka is saying she feels secure in her crate at night, so leave her be. Just because she is housebroken, doesn't mean she still doesn't need a crate. Some people still have this guilt over the crate, still have these feelings of cruelty. It is bad to rush putting it away. She might back track if you let her out to soon. It is so natural for the dog to sleep in a "den" type environment. Don't worry!!

Subject: Sleeping

I would be interested in any advice on sleeping arrangements for the Casino litter gang or others.  Milka still sleeps in a closed crate at night and I am trying to figure out when it will be good to start leaving the door open.  We tried to put her in the kitchen for the night a few weeks ago (she has a big LL bean bed (yes, she is spoiled) and spends a lot of time there as we tend to spend most of our time there) but she cried and so we put her back in her crate and she was quiet.  I want her to have more room and space but am also worried about what she might do during the night.  We've puppy proofed the house as best we can but still never sure.  I never crated my dogs in the past and so am new to this and want to make sure she feels safe and sound.  BTW, she LOVES being on the bed with us (which she gets to do in the late evening and sometimes in the mornings on weekends) but that is not a fulltime option for her (at least as long as Carl has a vote in this house :)  Thanks!  Karin
