Canine Good Citizen

Hi folks...

Gina asked me to talk a little about how to become a
Canine Good Citizen because Perry and I just taught
a CGC class and organized a local test.

The CGC test evaluates your dog's good manners. It is not
formal obedience. Dogs may heel on either side of you within
the length of their leash. They are not expected to do precision
sits or fronts.

Basically, your dog must not jump on, bite, or bark while in the test.
Otherwise, it's a fairly lenient test.

If you practice good manners at home and on your walks you can
pass the test. Everything is done on lead.

The ten different test stations of the CGC are:

1. Greeting a friendly stranger
2. Being petted by a friendly stranger
3. Being lightly brushed on the back and having the
	ears and feet handled
4. Heeling on lead
5. Walking through a crowd of people
6. Down or sit stay on lead while the owner walks 20 feet
	away
7. Come on command from 10 feet away.
8. Meeting a strange dog
9. Walking through distractions (at our test it was a fluttering sheet
	and a dropped book)
10. Staying with a stranger for 3 minutes while the owner leaves
	the room

I'd encourage each of you to consider to seek out this opportunity
in your community.
