What does "ps axww" show?  Just "ps" won't show all the processes.
At the very least it seems like mysqld isn't running.  There is supposed to
be a watchdog running to make sure that mysqld is running and responding,
but maybe it isn't running either.

You may be best off just rebooting your boss, but let me see the ps info
first.
