Anyone from Alaska want to exchange jobs & homes?!

Hi Lynn and Brierfolks:

Not me!   Nice and toasty here ;-)  Of course, our first frost is
predicted tonight and there's powdered sugar snow on the highest
peaks around the glacier....so we're not too far behind you.  Hey
Deb, how are the temps farther north?

Can anyone suggest some good web sites or books on tracking?

Books on tracking?   First of all, go to:

http://www.dogwise.com

Go half way down the page to the search box....instead of typing
anything in.....click on the blue "search by subject.

On the next screen, pull down the menu for "Training and Behavior".
Tracking is the last item listed.  Highlight it and click on "Go".

This will give you a long and comprehensive list of tracking books.

My personal favorites, and what I recommend to those just starting
out in tracking are Clothiers "Following Ghosts" for $6.50 which explains
a philosophical approach to tracking that is very important.

The other recommendation is Ganz' s "Tracking from the Ground Up".
There's a book and a video for $62.90.  But if that's too much, definitely
get just the book for $19.95.  It has training session by training session
outlines to go by each week.  It's a great reference book for those of
us just starting.

If you want a tracking harness and lead, we recommend the
Premiere ones.  You can find them at:

http://www.pawmark.com/harness.htm

If you take Monza into formal tracking training, these are great
because you can order them in two different colors.  The harness,
and the 20 feet of lead closest to the handler of the 40 foot line, are
one color.  And the 20 feet of the lead closest to the harness is another.
That way you know exactly how far back you need to be on the
lead when in a tracking trial, and it's very clear to the judges too.

These don't get mildewy (we've repeatedly thrown them into the back
of our car wet, which is a given in Juneau) and they don't get weight
heavy when wet either.

Tracking websites will come in the post following this....

Have fun tracking!  It's our favorite dog sport, followed closely by
agility these days :-)
