What I forgot to add before, is that all your actions are done with
love, compassion and a sense of fairness and justice. They are
never done out of anger, or a sense of "I'll teach you!"
If a dog senses that kind of energy, then you can get into a cycle
of their being "bad dog" to get your attention. Any attention is
better than no attention.
Let your energy be very neutral, as is you didn't care if you went
on the walk or not. Go about your normal routine interacting with
the dog like you usually do. Maybe give the dog another opportunity
a half hour later after they've had some time to think about what
happened before.
And praise profusely and reward heartily when they accomplish
what you were hoping for in behavior.
You have to have a lot of patience to do this, but the end result
is a spirited, loyal, willing to please dog that respects you for
being smarter and kinder.
I'm not saying you would be too heavy handed <s> I just know how
hard it is to achieve that "Zen-like" approach with a teenage puppy
in the house :-)))
