I agree with Deb that this is an interesting topic. It has
come up on one of the raw diet lists I'm on. One of the
families on the list does a lot of fishing, salmon included.
They lost a dog to salmon poisoning before they knew
what was happening. Now they have a vet who helps
them purposely expose their new dogs to the organism
in the salmon and then treat the symptoms early on. Once
a dog has had the organism, called rickettsia I think, they
are immune to further exposures. So, she doesn't have
to worry about that danger. Sounds risky so it would
need to be done under strict vet supervision but for those
who have to worry about inadvertent exposure it may
be something to consider. If anyone is interested, I will
try to contact this woman--it's a pretty small list--and
ask her what protocol she uses. We don't have the worry
so much--not being around a salmon stream or any other
water source except the kid's slip and slide which Bogey
now uses, too.
Take care, Lori
This discussion on salmon is as fascinating as I knew it would be!I'm SO glad that it's come about because judging from this experience on
your end of the world versus my end of the world tells me several things and
one of those things is that I now feel confident that there IS a difference
between our salmon and your Pacific Northwest Salmon Gina.
