abstract

Users of CloudLab (and other GENI-derived testbeds) commonly use image snapshots to preserve their working environments and to share them with other users. While snapshots re-create software environments byte-forbyte, they are not conducive to composing multiple environments, nor are they good for experiments that must run across many versions of their environments with subtle differences. This paper describes our initial work on an alternative experiment management system. This system is built on expendable instances of the Chef configuration management system, and can be used "on top of" existing testbeds
