Hi Eric,
  What i do is not perfect as i do sometimes run into something new, 
but i just follow the instructions at

https://users.emulab.net/trac/emulab/wiki/install/customize_images.html

with a small change.  If i have just a FC8 image i do am imageunzip on 
just the second partition on the disk and go about following the 
instructions on the web page to customize the image with the settings 
from our Emulab.

sudo ssh pc56 imageunzip -s 2 - /dev/ad4 < /share/Disk_Images/FC8-STD.ndz
