I just pushed a commit (96e2840) to fix this problem.  Please let me know if it
works for you.

I didn't use your patch, Bernhard.  It turns out that [ $] doesn't do what one
might like it to do!

Also, while fixing the bug, I took the opportunity to fix a consistency problem
and to generalize things a bit (e.g., deal with "-Wpedantic" and
"-pedantic-errors").
